Remote Meeting (See Instructions/Get Zoom Link Emailed)

I believe in the power of self-expression through imagery. During my presentation, I will discuss imagery as a form of self-expression, sharing examples of my own imagery conveying feelings and experiences during specific moments on the beaches and tidal flats of Cape Cod. My talk will emphasize not only technique, but also the overall photographic experience. I specialize in creative approaches for expressing movement of water, and these will be explored extensively.

Steven Koppel

Steve’s photographic images seek to convey the deep connection he has with Cape Cod, a place he and his family have cherished for over 30 years. Steve’s creative life is guided by the words: Arrive empty of expectations… leave filled with gratitude. During all hours, seasons, and conditions, Steve frequents Cape Cod’s waters to be present in places of beauty and personal meaning. In these moments, he considers himself witness first and photographer second, seeking to remain open to whatever awaits. Steve’s imagery allows him to express what he sees and feels, but the experiences themselves are his greatest reward. Steve explores creative techniques in the field making water, sand, and light appear to “move” across the scene. The camera becomes an extension of his senses, allowing expressions beyond what is possible through words.

Steve is the owner of EXPRESSIONS Gallery (www.expressionsgallery.com) in Chatham center, and donates proceeds from the sale of his work to the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. Steve has published two books, The Brewster Flats and The Cape Cod National Seashore, collections of emotive images chronicling the extraordinary visual spectacles that occur in these ever-changing landscapes.  Steve’s photography is on the walls of several Boston area hospitals and businesses, including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Massachusetts General Hospital, and The Flatley Company.

Steve is the founder of the EDI Institute (www.ediinstitute.org) a charitable organization inspired by his own photography. Through Expressive Digital Imagery® (EDI) and a specialized and first-of-its kind mobile app, the EDI Institute promotes healing, connection, and self-expression through digital imagery. Over 10,000 people have created more than 30,000 EDI images in settings including Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, McLean Hospital, Yale New Haven Health, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and the Gosnold Addiction Center on Cape Cod. Steve’s TEDx Talk on EDI can be viewed at https://ediinstitute.org/tedx-talk/

Prior to taking up photography, Steve spent 20 years as a business consultant with Accenture, leaving in 2002 to volunteer with non-profit organizations to help maximize social impact. Steve’s philanthropic work includes serving on the board of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Association to Preserve Cape Cod, and the Chatham Chamber of Commerce.
