What is Perspective?

The topic of our March competition is "perspective." You can also think of this as "unusual point of view" or "interesting angles." In other words, these are photos that are taken from something other than standing height looking forward. Here are a few sample stock images:

Our judge for the competition, Joanne Henig, has provided us with a description of some of the things that she'll be looking for when she evaluates our images.

Perspective from Judge Joanne Henig

"I am looking for images that creatively reinterpret the ordinary, presenting the world in a way that challenges or expands the viewer's understanding. I will evaluate how well the photographer uses vantage points, angles, and framing to convey a distinct point of view.

I am looking for entries that showcase a unique or thought-provoking point of view, perhaps pushing the boundaries of conventional ‘point & shoot'. The photographer should convey their chosen perspective through composition, lighting, and subject matter. Creativity and originality are important as well. Technical execution, such as sharpness, exposure, and post-processing, will also be important.

An example of an image that offers Perspective could be a photograph taken from the base of a towering skyscraper, looking straight up into the sky. The composition could feature the building's sharp, geometric lines converging toward a vanishing point, framed by other surrounding skyscrapers, creating a sense of scale and awe. This viewpoint emphasizes both the grandeur of architecture and the smallness of the observer in contrast to the vastness of the urban environment.

Alternatively, it could be an abstract image of a reflection in a puddle, where the viewer initially perceives a distorted cityscape but then realizes the water is the canvas. This layered storytelling invites viewers to question their initial assumptions, aligning with the theme of Perspective."
